It's really cool looking over this passage that I'm going to share with you! God has really spoken to me and highlighted a couple of really big points that I can't wait to tell you guys about tonight.....
Before I get to into the message tonight we as Seeds XS want to acknowledge that we are meeting on the traditional Country of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains and pay respect to Elders past and present.
Where I pick up the story is many years after the flood, I’m not sure how many and well no one is really but as far as we know it was a lot. It was at this time when Noah’s descendants began spreading out as we can read in Genesis 10:32 These were the families of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, in their nations; and from these the nations were divided on the earth after the flood.
In short in this lesson we will see the important development in how God prepared the nations of the world for the Promised One, also known as The Tower Of Babel.
So I don’t know about you guys but when I was young my friends and I use to make up our own language now it wasn’t very hard but we would take the first and last letter and switch them around so I would be like
Doog nfternooa everyone tonight I lilw eb gharins hitw uoy eht ytors tboua eht rowet fo labeb.
Does any one know what I said? Yeah I don’t even have a clue…
So in Geneses 11:1-9 we can read about the Tower Of Babel, Verse1; now the whole world had one language and common speech. So every on the earth spoke in the same language, they had no need to speak different languages.
Verse 2; as people moved eastward, they found an plain in Shinar and settled there. Dose anyone know where Shinar is? Shinar would be in out modern day Iraq.
Verse 3-4 they said to each other, “Come let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone and tar for mortar. 4 They said, “come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we can make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” In chapter 9 of Genesis it explains that God told Noah and his decedents to spread out and fill the earth. You can see that these people are not interested in in obeying Gods command. They were more interested in making a name for themselves. As you can imagine they are full of pride and want to be highly exulted.
Verse 5; But the lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. These people have completely turned there backs on God But God is still interested in them, God is faithful and is always there even when we might not want to be paying attention to him.
Verse 6; The lord says if as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. God saw that these people could do anything if they continued to speak the same langue but they weren’t doing good they where sinning once again. God knew that if he didn’t intervene that more bad things would happen, so he decided to act.
Verse 7-9 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” 8 So the Lord scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. 9 Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them over the face of all the earth. Boom God acted not with rathe or with destruction, but with love. God did the one thing that would stop the mayhem. He made them all speak in different languages and not to be able to understand each other. This action made them all move on and to go to other country’s and lands some went by foot and others by boat.
In this story we see many things, first we see a bunch of people our ancestors disobeying God and wanting to make a name for themselves. Then we see God heart acing once again for these people it wasn’t that long ago that he caused a flood to take out the whole population and now the world is falling back into the same trends, so God acts out of love to intervene. People keep on wanting to run away from Gods love, all God wants for us ‘Love’.
Something I find amazing is besides from this story in Genesis no one has any idea on how langue’s and cultures came about there is no other theory with any evidence to back it up! The only one is the story of Gods great love for us. Now if you ask me that is really awesome!
The God we believe in is the God of all things he made all the animas, the sea the sky he placed every star in the sky, he made Adam and Eve, he mad a great flood and he also made different languages and cultures. In this we can see that God is a God for all cultures he loves every culture the same if you are English, German, Italian, true blue Australian, what whatever God made your language and culture and loves he it!
But now that we have all these different cultures and languages, how can God get his message to all the nations and to be translated into all languages. Christy will teach us more about this next week.
