Chapter 4 of The Story begins... In Goshen- the place where Joseph and his family had settled to escape the famine. They were given great honour and taken care of well due to Joseph's position in Egypt. Goshen was God's way of preserving his chosen family/nation... They were kept together in one place, safe, secure, happy. However as they multiplied and the generations passed the next Pharaoh didn't remember how Joseph had saved Egypt, and what debt was owed his family. And as Joseph had long since passed away- it seems remembrance of him died with Him. Now the Egyptians viewed the growing family of hebrews as an internal threat! Who knew when they might rise up against them? So instead of treating them well, they turned on them. Made them slaves. Life was very hard for God's people now. But despite this, their numbers kept multiplying!! (as God had promised they would!) This only made pharaoh fear them all the more. This led him to start murdering baby boys that were born.
However God had a plan of deliverance! And a plan to bring his people to the land he had promised them- the promises he had made to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob!
Moses was born amongst the Hebrew people. His parents kept him hidden and put him in a basket in the river. He was found and saved by Pharaoh's own daughter- who took him in as her own child! Little did Pharaoh know that the redemption of the Hebrew people was being raised under his very own roof!!
God hadn't forgotten his people during this time. Though they certainly felt that he had. They were suffering. But he heard their cries and was preparing a plan for their deliverance! Moses disappeared for about 20 years into the wilderness after losing his temper and killing an Egyptian guard. He grew up passionate to help his people but he didn't yet know how to do this according to God's plan. Like Abraham had also tried, he was attempting to make things happen in his own strength!
In the desert, Moses married a woman named Zipporah (nice name!) and had a couple kids... He had all but forgotten about his people in Egypt... But God hadn't!!
When God came to Moses to tell him to go deliver his people, you think Moses would be keen! Knowing God was on his side and ready to go and appearing to him in a burning bush and all. But Moses protested, saying he wasn't very good at speaking and he should get someone else. God was a bit miffed at Moses reluctance but eventually Moses gave in, when God offered Aaron to go with him as his spokesman.
What takes place after is perhaps the best well known of all bible stories from the OT. Through a series of dramatic plagues Pharaoh eventually lets Gods people Go but not without massive loss to Egypt. The plagues culminated in 'the passover' where the first born son in every household was killed- unless the blood of a lamb had been smeared on the door posts. The Hebrew people followed the Lord's instructions and were saved- by the blood of the lamb.
Then God showed his mighty strength by cutting the sea in half so they would walk through it to escape from the Egyptians (who had changed their mind again and were now hot on their heels!!) He is the God of the impossible!! No situation is beyond Him! And if you don't have any personal 'history' of miracles in your life or family- did you know that when you became a Christian you were 'grafted' into the family of God? Their story is your story too! Their history is your history as well! HE is the same God yesterday today and forever and YOU are part of HIS STORY! God is ready and able to come into your world and do incredible things! Just ask Him!
You think after all these marvellous signs and wonders they wouldn't have ANY trouble in believing God again would you? Do you think if you saw such wonders you would trust God and not doubt any more? It's a good one to ponder and the reality might surprise us as we read on into the next chapter....
